Head of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation calls for reinforcement of nation’s nuclear defenses

(MENAFN) Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom), on Thursday called for the reinforcement of the country’s nuclear defenses, citing “colossal threats.”

“Now, in the current moment of geopolitics, there are colossal threats to the existence of our country,” Likhachev said, according to Russian state media.

He stressed that Russia’s nuclear shield remains a vital guarantee of sovereignty. “Today we understand that the nuclear shield must only improve in the coming years," he added.

Russia has been enhancing its nuclear deterrence capabilities in recent years, particularly since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022. Last November, President Vladimir Putin approved an updated nuclear doctrine, which states that “aggression” against Russia or its allies by a non-nuclear country backed by a nuclear power will be treated as a direct attack on Russia.

The doctrine also allows for nuclear use in response to critical threats to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and Belarus, which have been in a formal union state since 1999.

Putin first outlined the need for these changes in a Sept. 25, 2024, address, highlighting the urgency of updating the doctrine.
