Zelenskyy names Chrystia Freeland as economic development adviser
Zelenskyy praised Freeland’s expertise, saying she is “highly skilled in these matters and has extensive experience in attracting investment and implementing economic transformations.”
He emphasized Ukraine’s urgent need to strengthen internal resilience, both to support recovery if diplomatic solutions progress quickly and to bolster defense in case delays prolong the conflict.
Freeland, who has Ukrainian ancestry, served as Canada’s deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024 and remains an active lawmaker in the country’s lower house. She also holds the role of Ottawa’s special envoy for Ukraine’s reconstruction.
In a separate decree, Zelenskyy appointed First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya as First Deputy Head of Ukraine’s presidential office. Zelenskyy said Kyslytsya will continue his involvement in negotiations and work to strengthen diplomatic engagement, ensuring communication with partners at the highest level, fostering bilateral relations, and coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Kyslytsya previously served as Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN from February 2020 to February 2025 before becoming first deputy foreign minister. However, Taras Melnychuk, the Ukrainian government’s parliamentary representative, later noted on Telegram that Kyslytsya had been dismissed from his role as first deputy foreign minister.
Zelenskyy announced on Friday that Ukraine would implement “substantial” internal reforms aimed at enhancing the country’s resilience.
