Carney Rejects US Control Over Trade Talks, Stresses Equal Negotiation
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa ahead of a Liberal caucus meeting, Carney said, “It’s not a case of the United States dictates the terms,” according to reports. He added that both sides are engaged in a negotiation process aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial outcome, while acknowledging that discussions will take time.
Carney noted that Canada and the US have already identified several areas of friction ahead of expected discussions under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). He said these issues exist on both sides of the border, according to reports.
He also stated that Canada has already presented “counterproposals” and that US officials are aware of them, adding that more detailed negotiations will begin in due course when both sides are ready to “roll up our sleeves,” according to reports.
Meanwhile, media reports citing sources familiar with the talks indicated that the Trump administration is seeking concessions from Canada before formal negotiations advance.
Former Quebec premier Jean Charest, recently appointed to Carney’s advisory committee on Canada-US economic relations, also said the US president is pushing for significant concessions prior to negotiations, according to reports.
Separate Canadian sources told broadcasters that Ottawa has already made concessions on two occasions without receiving reciprocal measures, according to reports.
