ICYMI: NFL Draft Delivered $177 Million in Economic Impact for the Pittsburgh Region
 

Independent analyses report the draft generated $177 million in economic impact and more than $1.5 billion in overall economic value for Pittsburgh. 

The Commonwealth is the center of America’s biggest moments this year, hosting world-class sports, culture, and national celebration events including the NFL Draft, the PGA Championship, the FIFA World Cup, America250PA, and the MLB All-Star Game — all of which will drive hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity across Pennsylvania. 

Under Governor Josh Shapiro’s leadership, Pennsylvania’s economy remains one of the strongest in the nation ― and is the only state in the Northeast with a growing economy. 

Harrisburg, PA – A record 805,000 football fans visited Pittsburgh for the 2026 NFL Draft, generating $177 million in economic impact and more than $1.5 billion for the Pittsburgh region, according to two post-event reports released this week. From the NFL Draft to the FIFA World Cup to the MLB All-Star Game — the Shapiro Administration is using these moments to bring more economic opportunity here to the Commonwealth and make sure the whole world knows: Pennsylvania is open for business.

“My Administration was proud to work with VisitPITTSBURGH, the Steelers, and local elected officials to bring the NFL Draft to Pittsburgh – and together, we delivered a world-class event and showcased the City at its best to a record number of fans,” said Governor Josh Shapiro. “This report shows how investing in tourism and major events like the NFL Draft creates real opportunity and drives economic momentum. We are going to continue to invest in Downtown Pittsburgh and ensure it remains a vibrant, prosperous, welcoming destination for residents, businesses, and visitors for years to come.”

VisitPITTSBURGH received state support from the Shapiro Administration in the 2026 state budget, including $10 million in funding through the Marquis Events program. The reports, conducted by nationally recognized firms Sportsimpacts and Trajektory, evaluated the economic impact and economic value for the region. Sportsimpacts analyzed the event's economic impact, visitor spending and destination perception, while Trajektory quantified the economic value of Pittsburgh's global media exposure across broadcast, public relations, social media and in-venue activations from the time Pittsburgh was awarded the Draft through the conclusion of the event. 

Together, the studies demonstrate that the 2026 NFL Draft delivered immediate and long-term economic returns while also elevating Pittsburgh's reputation as a premier destination for tourism, conventions, business investment, talent attraction and future major events. 

“These results of these independent reports show that major events like the NFL Draft are powerful economic drivers for Pennsylvania — bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors, supporting local businesses, and showcasing our communities to a global audience,” said DCED Secretary Rick Siger. “Under Governor Shapiro’s leadership, we’re leveraging these opportunities to drive tourism, attract new investment and talent, and strengthen local economies. The NFL Draft is another example of Pennsylvania delivering big moments and big economic results.”

Governor Josh Shapiro, Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, and leaders from the Shapiro Administration took advantage of the 2026 NFL Draft weekend to unveil key projects completed as part of the Governor’s Downtown Pittsburgh Revitalization Plan and meet with business leaders to promote the Commonwealth’s competitive edge as a top destination for economic development.

After unveiling the revitalized Arts Landing Park and reopening Downtown Market Square, the Shapiro Administration – in partnership with local officials – took site selectors on a tour around the region, highlighting the Commonwealth’s support for business expansion and attraction.

Throughout events with CEOs, site selectors, and business professionals over the course of the weekend, Governor Shapiro touted Pennsylvania’s booming business climate, the Administration’s work to reduce permitting times and invest in business friendly programs like Pennsylvania First, while highlighting the strength of the Commonwealth’s workforce. 
 

Pennsylvania Tourism Is Growing

Tourism is a key priority in Governor Shapiro’s Economic Development Strategy — and new data shows the industry is surging. In 2024, Pennsylvania welcomed over 201 million visitors, generating a record-breaking $83.9 billion in total economic impact. Visitor spending reached $49.9 billion and the industry supported more than 514,000 jobs.
