Wang Yi Holds Talks with Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Roberto Velasco Álvarez
On September 7, 2026, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi held talks with Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Roberto Velasco Álvarez in Beijing.
Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping’s cordial greetings to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, noting that as developing major countries, China and Mexico share similar philosophies and common interests. Both sides are committed to accelerating national development and rejuvenation, and aspire to build a more just and equitable global governance system. China and Mexico have become partners for mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, as well as positive forces for safeguarding international peace, fairness, and justice. China has always viewed and advanced China-Mexico relations from the strategic perspective of solidarity and cooperation among Global South countries. China appreciates Mexico’s long-standing and firm adherence to the one-China principle, supports Mexico in pursuing independent development, safeguarding its sovereignty and security, and opposing foreign interference. The China-Mexico relationship does not target any third party, nor should it be subject to influence from any third party.
Wang Yi stated that head-of-state diplomacy plays a leading role in China-Mexico relations. China is willing to work with Mexico to strengthen high-level exchanges, consolidate political mutual trust, make good use of bilateral communication mechanisms at all levels, deepen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and promote the continuous and in-depth development of the China-Mexico comprehensive strategic partnership.
Wang Yi stated that the theme of the 2026 APEC China Year is “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together.” China is willing to take the opportunity of hosting various APEC events to work with all parties to revitalize the Asia-Pacific community and activate the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) process. As China and Mexico share similar positions on many international and regional issues, China is willing to strengthen strategic coordination with Mexico on international and multilateral stages, safeguard their respective legitimate interests, and make joint efforts for the unity and self-strengthening of the Global South.
Roberto Velasco Álvarez conveyed Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping, and once again expressed condolences over the mudslide disaster in Gyirong County, Xigaze City of Xizang Autonomous Region. Roberto Velasco Álvarez stated that Mexico-China friendship has a long history, and both sides share mutual respect and hold the same philosophy on principles such as respect for sovereignty and national equality. Mexico appreciates the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence proposed by China, and firmly adheres to the one-China principle and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. Mexico is willing to implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state of both countries, strengthen high-level exchanges, advance bilateral mechanisms, and expand and deepen practical cooperation to achieve new outcomes in Mexico-China cooperation. Mexico supports China in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and playing a leading role, and is willing to strengthen coordination with China to jointly safeguard the international multilateral system.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional hot issues of mutual interest.
