Government expands housing, economic opportunities for Amerindian communities
The government continues to expand housing, livelihood and business opportunities for Amerindian families as part of its wider development agenda to ensure indigenous communities benefit from Guyana’s economic growth.
This is according to the Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs and Information, Kwame McCoy, who was at the time addressing a mammoth gathering on Sunday at Kuru Kururu.
“We will ensure that continuously, the lives of our Amerindian families can develop and will develop… that you have secured homes that you can call your own,” Minister McCoy stated.
Additionally, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that Amerindian families benefit from opportunities being created across the country.
Against this backdrop, he pointed to ongoing housing development along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
“We are working to get the housing scheme at St. Cuthberts Mission activated and operationalised… where we will be able to have people in that scheme.”
The Minister also highlighted the development of housing for single-parent women, noting that these initiatives will form part of the country’s growing housing stock.
He said the government’s housing programme will continue until more Guyanese can secure homes.
Beyond housing, Minister McCoy said the development agenda is also creating opportunities for Amerindian entrepreneurs and small vendors.
He noted that the Heritage celebrations themselves have become an avenue for small businesses to generate income, with vendors benefiting from the increased activity associated with the annual event.
The minister said the government will continue supporting opportunities that allow Amerindian people to advance their businesses, secure livelihoods and participate meaningfully in the country’s wealth creation.
He added that the development process is continuous and requires the participation of all Guyanese, stressing that greater progress can be achieved through unity and collective effort.
